I'm Tom Nolle, and I'm a Silver Adventurer. Not real sliver in the traditional sense of hair color (at this point, anyway) but certainly a senior and not your typical adventure traveler. But despite my age, I've been all over this wonderful planet; Antarctica to Zimbabwe. I've hiked in jungle, climbed on glaciers, and done a lot of things that many people my age wouldn't consider possible. I'm not a fitness guru either, I'm a typical business executive type that exercises but probably could do with more of it. My point is that if you're interested in seeing the world in the real sense and not watching it on TV, then you can. I've traveled with people in their 80s and seen them do zodiac landings on rocky arctic islands. Everybody isn't going to climb mountains, of course, but you'd be surprised at the adventures you can have while staying within your physical limits and preserving your sense of safety so you enjoy where you're visiting.
This wiki is intended to be a guide to those seniors who, like me, refuse to sit and watch life move past them. I'll post my adventures here, and I invite others who have experiences they'd like to share to contact me to have their stories told here too. I'm offering tips that I've learned on my travels, and I'd like to hear yours. I'll share pictures and I want you to do the same.
Anyone who reaches 50 knows that comments like "your life is only beginning at..." some senior age is likely talking nonsense and platitudes, but for sure your life isn't over at 50, or 60, or 70, or beyond. It's as full of adventure as you're willing to make it.
We're adding "Destination Reports" to our "Stories" section! Check out our first one on Africa.
Have some great adventure trips for seniors? Meet me at the NY Times Travel Show on the 19th of January to talk!
